Inside of Iceland’s capital lies so many great restaurants and atmospheres. It’s important to understand that Iceland is a very expensive country. The food is no exception so do not be surprised by the high prices.

Now here are some great best spots in the city!

Snaps American Bistro

This cute French bistro feels like you’re eating inside of a greenhouse with potted plants and unique light fixtures. It’s very rustic and cozy. Snaps is a very popular restaurant in Iceland, so make a reservation if you can. Many people choose to do Brunch here. Some things you’ll want to consider ordering are French Onion soup, salad, and oysters. Additionally, the cocktails are great!

Kopar Restaurant

A seafood restaurant in the old harbor providing locally sourced food. The ceilings are tall with beautiful wood beams, and there is a wide window allowing you to look out over the harbor. This is a place where you can also do a tasting menu, and let the chef guide your meal!

Dill Restaurant

This one-star Michelin restaurant prides itself on being sustainable and unique. They use locally grown ingredients in their dishes and strive to give a simplistic food experience. To get the full Icelandic journey, it is recommended you pair your food with their wine options. Overall, if you have the time and money this is a very good restaurant to visit.

Grillmarkadurinn (Grillmarket)

This restaurant uses seasonal ingredients from local farms to present an Icelandic experience with a modern twist. If you want to get a real feel of the culture, it’s recommended that you try the tasting menu. You may see lamb, beef, quail, skyr and honey on the menu. All dishes are family style for the table to enjoy and are served in the order the chef recommends. I’ve heard that they also have fantastic cocktails made with Brennivín!

Sjavargrillid (Seafood Grill)

This cozy restaurant prepares dishes beautifully and is a great stop for seafood lovers. After all, the fish in Iceland is incredibly fresh. Try the arctic char, tuna or salmon! Note, this would also be a good place for sushi.

Skolabru

A romantic Icelandic restaurant located in a quaint historic building. Staff here is known to be attentive and friendly. The decor is simple but elegant. There are seafood, land food and vegetarian options here.

The Coocoo’s Nest

This family owned restaurant delivers their food with a California/Italian twist. The menu varies based on when you go, which is very unique. For lunch you can expect healthy options or deli sandwiches. If you go there Wednesday or Thursday night, you’ll see homemade sourdough pizzas. And if you go on a Friday or Saturday, you’re in for a more complex menu with starters, homemade pastas, meats, fish, and desserts.
